There is so much about IVF that nobody sees.<\/span><\/p>

Most people know about the injections. The scans. The appointments. Probably the egg retrievals and transfers too.<\/span><\/p>

But when we think back on our own years of IVF, some of the hardest parts were the things happening quietly in the background.<\/span><\/p>

The waiting. The Googling at 2am. The dates we calculated in our heads and never told anyone about. Watching other people\u2019s lives move forward while ours seemed to revolve around treatment.<\/span><\/p>

That\u2019s why we\u2019re starting Invisible IVF.<\/b><\/p>

A series about the parts of fertility treatment that aren\u2019t always visible from the outside, but can take up an enormous amount of space when you\u2019re the one living through them.<\/span><\/p>

And we wanted to start with hope.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

What Is Hope?\n\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

At the beginning of IVF, hope can feel simple.<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s the belief that this treatment will work. For both of us, starting IVF felt like a step forward. We genuinely thought it would happen quite quickly.<\/span><\/p>

Maybe this treatment.<\/span>
<\/span> Maybe this embryo.<\/span>
<\/span> Maybe this transfer.<\/span><\/p>

But slowly, those hopes were chipped away.<\/span><\/p>

Maybe the next treatment.<\/span>
<\/span> Maybe the next embryo.<\/span>
<\/span> Maybe next time.<\/span><\/p>

And after enough disappointment, hope starts to change.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

When Hope Isn\u2019t The Light, Lovely Thing People Imagine\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

We still desperately wanted to believe IVF could work.<\/span><\/p>

But allowing ourselves to believe also meant opening ourselves up to being hurt again.<\/span><\/p>

We\u2019d imagine the due date. Think about what month the baby might arrive. Wonder whether this embryo could finally be the one.<\/span><\/p>

And then that little voice would appear:<\/span><\/p>

Don\u2019t get ahead of yourself.<\/b><\/p>

That push and pull became such a familiar part of IVF – wanting something with everything you have, while simultaneously trying to protect yourself from wanting it too much.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Sometimes Protecting Yourself Looks Like Loosing Hope<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

One thing we wish we\u2019d understood earlier is that <\/span>hope doesn\u2019t always look like believing this is going to work.<\/p>

Sometimes hope is much quieter than that.<\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s taking the next injection.<\/span>
<\/span> Turning up for another scan.<\/span>
<\/span> Going through another egg retrieval.<\/span>
<\/span> Asking another question.<\/span>
<\/span> Getting through another wait.<\/span><\/p>

Or simply making it through a day without thinking about IVF for a few hours.<\/span><\/p>

We aren\u2019t going to tell you to stay positive.<\/span><\/p>

We\u2019ve been on the receiving end of those words too.<\/span><\/p>

If hope feels complicated – or simply too heavy to carry today – we understand.<\/span><\/p>

Put it down for a while.<\/b><\/p>

It\u2019ll still be there when you\u2019re ready to pick it back up.<\/span><\/p>

We\u2019ve carried it too.<\/b><\/p>
